Challenge
A disagreement between two employees had escalated into a serious workplace conflict. Communication had broken down, teamwork was affected, and the parties were increasingly avoiding one another.
Management recognised that simply addressing the immediate complaint would not resolve the underlying relationship issues.
Approach
The mediation process began with confidential individual discussions with each employee.
The mediator then facilitated a joint session where both parties were able to express their concerns without interruption. Attention was given to communication breakdowns, expectations, misunderstandings, and the impact of the conflict on their working relationship.
The parties were supported to identify practical commitments for improving future communication and cooperation.
Outcome
The employees reached a mutually acceptable understanding and agreed on specific steps for improving their working relationship.
The mediation created an opportunity for both parties to be heard, acknowledge their respective concerns, and establish a more constructive way of interacting.
Lessons Learned
Workplace conflicts can affect productivity, morale, and team performance. Addressing conflict early through a structured process can prevent a disagreement from becoming a much larger organisational problem.
